About Us

Our History
While we did not meet until the mid 1990s, we took similar paths, shooting for newspapers as teenagers, then continuing in photojournalism for 20 years as national and state award winners in a highly competitive field. Both of us were nominated for The Pulitzer Prize in 2007, and our work has been published in Time, Newsweek, Life, People, The New York Times and Charleston Magazine.
We honed our skills by working under strict deadlines, shooting everything from the Iraq war and documentary projects to college football and fashion spreads. We pride ourselves on recording life moments with a lens, whether our photos will be seen by thousands on the front page or by generations in a treasured family wedding album.
We became colleagues while working at The Post and Courier newspaper in Charleston, then friends and business partners. Our wives and children are also close, so Lowcountry Photojournalism has the feel of a family business.
Alan continues on at the newspaper, while Mic left in 2008 to pursue wedding and freelance photography full time. His top clients include Roper St. Francis Healthcare, Trident Technical College and the Associated Press. Mic’s photographs also are featured in a new Gullah cookbook published by Joggling Board Press. To view our personal web sites go to Mic Smith's web site or Alan Hawe's web site.
Our Style
At Lowcountry Photojournalism, we follow you through your wedding day, blending in and letting events unfold as naturally as possible, while taking care to get the shots you want.
We have a more artistic approach than many traditional wedding photographers, and by focusing on story-telling images, we fully capture the emotion of the day, while allowing you more time to celebrate.
At the same time, we realize the importance that many place on group portraits, and will talk with you beforehand about your tastes and priorities.
We understand how important your collection of photos will be to you. We intend to tell the story of your wedding so that you will relive it for years to come.
